Process Overview
Introduction
SMART attributes is a monitoring system for hard disk drives to detect and report on various reliability indicators. LabTech scans for SMART information, if enabled on the computer, when hard drive information is gathered on the agents. This information is displayed on the Drives tab within the Computer Management screen.
| NOTE: SMART must be enabled on the motherboard, hard drive and in the operating system. |
To access the SMART attributes in LabTech:
- From the Control Center, select Dashboard > Config > Configurations > Smart Attributes.

Adding Smart Attributes
If there are attributes that are not in the current list of attributes, you can add additional attributes. To add attributes, follow the instructions below:
- From the Smart Attributes tab, select Clear to clear the fields and enable the Add button.
- Enter the Name of the attribute.
- Enter the AttributeID.
- Enter a Description for the attribute.
- Click Add. The new attribute will be immediately added to the list.
Deleting Smart Attributes
If an attribute is not valid, you can delete it from the list. To delete a smart attribute, follow the instructions listed below:
- From the Smart Attributes tab, right-click on the attribute to delete and select Delete. You will be prompted to confirm.

TIP: You can select multiple attributes by holding down the [Shift] key or using the [Ctrl] key. - Select Yes to delete or No to cancel. The attribute will be immediately deleted from the list.
Editing Smart Attributes
- From the Smart Attributes tab, highlight the attribute to edit. The Add button will change to a Save button.
- Make the desired changes. Click Save.
Exporting Selected Attributes
These attributes can be imported into other systems. To export as a .SQL file or LabTech expansion, follow the steps listed below:
- From the Smart Attributes tab, highlight the attribute(s) to export. You can select multiple attributes by holding down the [Shift] key or using the [Ctrl] key.
- Click the Export Selected button. You will be prompted to select the location to export the file to.
- Navigate to the location you want to save the file.
- Enter the File name.
- Select 'SQL File' or 'LabTech Expansion' from the Save as type: drop-down.
- Click Save.

| 2 | Throughput PERF | The average performance of the hard disk. |
| 3 | Spin up Time | The time needed for the disk to reach operational rotation. |
| 4 | Start Stop Count | The number of start/stop cycles. |
| 5 | Realloc Sector Count | The number of remapped sectors. |
| 6 | Read Channel Margin | Reserve of channel, while reading. |
| 7 | Seek Error Rate | Frequency rate of errors while positioning the magnetic heads. |
| 8 | Seek Time PERF | Average performance of seek operations of the magnetic heads. |
| 9 | Power on Hrs Count | The number of hours the disk has been powered on. |
| 10 | Spin Retry Count | Number of attempts to start a disk. Low values represent a problem in the disk. |
| 11 | Calibration Retry Count | Represents the number of attempts to calibrate a drive. |
| 12 | Power Cycle Count | This attribute indicates the count of full hard disk power on/off cycles. |
| 13 | Soft Read Error Rate | Frequency of software errors while reading data from a disk. |
| 99 | Average FHC | Maxtor hard drive attribute. Can be an indicator of drive aging and/or potential electromechanical problem. |
| 100 | Erase/Program Cycles | Maxtor hard drive attribute. Can be an indicator of drive aging and/or potential electromechanical problem. |
| 101 | Maximum FHC | Maxtor hard drive attribute. Can be an indicator of drive aging and/or potential electromechanical problem. |
| 170 | Reserved Block Count | Indicates the number of reserved bad block handling. |
| 171 | Program Fail Count | Indicates a number of flash program failures. |
| 172 | Erase Fail Count | Four bytes used to show the number of block erase failures since the drive was deployed. |
| 173 | Wear Leveling Count | Indicates the worst case erase count. |
| 174 | Unexpected Power Loss | Indicates a number of unexpected power loss events. |
| 177 | Wear Range Delta | Returns the percentage difference in wear between the most worn block and the least worn block. |
| 181 | Program Fail Count | Four bytes used to show the number of program failures there have been. |
| 182 | Erase Fail Count | Four bytes used to show the number of block erase failures since the drive was deployed. |
| 183 | SATA Downshift Error Count | Western Digital and Samsung attribute. |
| 184 | End-to-End Error | This attribute is a part of HP's SMART IV technology and it means that after transferring through the cache RAM data buffer the parity data between the host and the hard drive did not match. |
| 185 | Head Stability | Western Digital attribute. |
| 186 | Induced Op-Vibration Detection | Western Digital attribute. |

| 188 | Command Timeout | The count of aborted operations due to HDD timeout. Normally this attribute value should be equal to zero and if the value is far above zero, then most likely there will be some serious problems with power supply or an oxidized data cable. |
| 189 | High Fly Writes | HDD producers implement a Fly Height Monitor that attempts to provide additional protections for write operations by detecting when a recording head is flying outside its normal operating range. If an unsafe fly height condition is encountered, the write process is stopped, and the information is rewritten or reallocated to a safe region of the hard drive. This attribute indicates the count of these errors detected over the lifetime of the drive. |

| 191 | G Sense Error Rate | Shows number of errors resulting from impacts. |
| 192 | Power Off Retract Cycle | This attribute indicates the number of times the head was retracted as a result of power loss. |

| 194 | Temperature | The drive temperature in Celsius. |
| 195 | Hardware ECC Recovered | Frequency of on-the-fly errors. |
| 196 | Reallocation Events Count | The number of times a sector remapping took place. |
| 197 | Current Pending Sector Count | The number of sectors with read problems that are waiting to be remapped. |
| 198 | Uncorrectable Sector Count | The total count of uncorrectable errors when reading/writing a sector. |
| 199 | UltraDMA CRC Error Rate | Total number of CRC errors encountered by the controller during UltraDMA mode. |
| 200 | Write Error Rate | Frequency of errors while writing data onto the disk. |
| 201 | Soft Read Error Rate | Frequency of software errors while reading data from a disk. |
| 202 | Data Address Mark Errors | Frequency of the data address mark errors. |
| 203 | Run Out Cancel | Frequency of the ECC errors. |
| 204 | Soft ECC Correction | Number of errors corrected by ECC. |
| 205 | Thermal Asperity Rate | Frequency of the thermal asperity errors. |
| 206 | Flying Height | The height of the disk heads above the disk surface. |
| 207 | Spin High Current | Amount of high current used to spin up drive. |
| 208 | Spin Buzz | Number of buzz routines to spin up drive. |
| 209 | Offline Seek Performance | Samsung, Seagate, IBM, Fujitsu (not all models), Maxtor and Western Digital (not all models) attribute. Can be an indicator of drive aging and/or potential electromechanical problem. |
| 211 | Vibration During Write | Indicates vibration was encountered during the write operations. |
| 212 | Shock During Write | Indicates shocks encountered during write operations. |
| 220 | Disk Shift | Incidents where disk has shifted from spindle axis. |
| 221 | G Sense Error Rate II | Rate of errors occurring as a result of impact loads. This attribute stores an indication of a shock-sensitive sensor, that is, the total quantity of errors occurring as a result of internal impact loads (dropping drive, wrong installation, etc.). |
| 222 | Loaded Hours | Loading on magnetic heads actuator caused by the general operating time. Only time when the actuator was in the operating position is counted. |
| 223 | Load Unload Retry Count | Number of loading retries when reading, recording, and positioning of heads. |
| 224 | Load Friction | Loading on drive caused friction. |
| 225 | Load Unload Cycle Count II | Loading on magnetic heads actuator caused by numerous recurrences of operations like: reading, recording, positioning of heads, etc. Only the time when heads were in the operating position is counted. |
| 226 | Load in Time | Total time that the heads were in the run position. |
| 227 | Torque Amplification Count | Quantity of efforts of the rotating movement of the drive. |
| 228 | Power Off Retract Count | This attribute shows a count of the number of times the drive was powered down. |

| 230 | GMR Head Amplitude | Amplitude of heads trembling in running mode. |
| 231 | SSD Life Left | % of life left in the drive. |
| 232 | Endurance Remaining | Number of physical erase cycles completed on the drive as a percentage of the maximum physical erase cycles the drive supports. |
| 233 | Power-On Hours | The number of hours the disk has been powered on. |
